New Delhi, March 20 (IANS) The total amount of the Central government debt or liabilities are estimated at Rs 155.8 lakh crore (57.3 percent of GDP) as on March 31, the Parliament was told on Monday. Out of this, external debt, valued at the current exchange rate, is estimated at Rs 7.03 lakh crore (2.6% of GDP). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
The share of external debt is only about 4.5 percent of the total debt/liabilities of the Central government and less than 3 percent of GDP. External debt is financed mainly by multilateral and bilateral agencies at concessional rates, and therefore, the risk profile stands out as safe and prudent, said the reply.
