The move to lay railway lines and introduce semi-high speed and high-speed rail connectivity is to get a fillip with the state government set to form a particular purpose vehicle through Tidco with railways. “Compared to many other states, railways’ share in the modal mix of the transport system in TN is meagre.
Addressing this, the government will create an SPV through Tidco to identify and undertake new railways projects,” said finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan.
The SPV can also take up slow-moving projects inc including new lines. Chennai Metro Rail Limited is studying the feasibility of running air-conditioned suburban trains on the Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpet route. CMDA will learn to lay a fourth line between Chengalpet and Tambaram.
